Game Notes:
Nice night out on Long Island.....
Crowd announced as a near sellout - I believe that you could find
about 2,000 seats unsold.....but a nice enough crowd for a November
Saturday night.
I think the worm has turned. New Jersey just does not seem to have a
very good team. I use the word "seem" - as the Devils sometime take
a bit to gel - and last year was the same story.
still, they are missing a lot of players over the years that just
can't be replaced...... Dano, Stevens, Neidermaier, Gomez to name a
few....with only Zach Parise who can be considered a real stud player
to come in.....
The reason why the Isles had no penalties tonight - was that they
threw (functionally) a no-hitter. They did not take the body nearly
as much tonight. that said - they did have a good forecheck and
played well on D and in nets. Just could not create much - as
neither could NJD either. Not saying the game was dull, but it was
about 3 notches down from the last two games I saw here at Nassau.

Take Two Points and call me in the morning.....
You know what they did well ? A lot.
They controlled the pace of the game, they played solid "D" and got
some clutch saves from DiPietro. I thought Brodeur was equally
solid...and both had to make tough saves. DP had to come up big late
in the third.
They go on the road for four games. PHI/PIT/NJD and NYR.
This team is competing. No K V A S H I N G --- NO dipsy doodle
Euros..... and they are fun to watch.

Islanders Esoteric #13
Ok, no 1,000th game celebration? No, Arbour night? No, Isles - Ranger rivalry game? It was Military Appreciation Night - so there was some meaning to the game.
Our very own, "Save the Last Chicken Dance" blogger, Peter Flynn (USN) made the jumbotron tonight along with his brother, Kevin Flynn (USMC).

I hope our Captain is OK. Seemed like a lot of the guys were slow getting up tonight. Newsday's Logan is saying that a team official said Bill will be evaluated on Monday.

Speaking of Martinek. I find I can not support the movement to make him an all-star. Call me selfish, but I do have good reason. I feel that Radek only has a certain number of games to play for us this season before he gets his annual season ending injury. I do not want one of those games or the injury to come because of or at the all-star game. Yes, I say this all tongue-in-cheek but I do base this on the facts and Radeks' time on the IR in the past.
Damn! Rangers won in a shootout. So not only do they win they also gave away a point to a conference rival.
Watching the Oilers - Flames game. It is cool hearing Nystrom's name being talked about on the TV.

Forever1940's Stat Trick
1. The first place Isles have now won consecutive games that they trailed after
two periods (both in regulation time). They are now 2-3-0 when trailing after
40 minutes and, going back to last January, are 7-11-1 in the last nineteen
games that they've trailed after two periods.
2. Miro Satan now has 26 career goals against the Rangers in his career -- more
than any other NHLer against the Rangers since Satan entered the league.
3. The Isles are now 8-1-2 in their last 11 games against the Rangers, matching
the best 11-game stretches in club history (done most recently during the
dynasty days).

4. Chris Drury's pp goal was only the fourth goal of any kind that the Rangers
have scored in the second period this season.
5. Is it the return of Fort Neverlose? The Isles are 6-2 at home, and have
earned 12 points in their first eight home games. This equals their best home
start since opening 7-1 at home in 1986.
6. The Rangers are 0-5-1 on the road. It's the first time in 55 years that the
Rangers have only one point in their first six road games.
This ridiculously strange schedule has had the Isles playing so infrequently
that it almost seems like they are not in the NHL. In fact, when the Isles take
to the ice on Saturday, it will be 5 weeks and 1 day (36 days) after they opened
the season in Buffalo.
Only once before have the Isles taken that long to reach game 13. In 1999, the
Isles took 39 games between the opener and game 13-- but that season featured
eight days between games 1 and 2.
How does this compare to recent seasons? The inactivity is not an illusion.
Last year, game 13 was 30 days after the opener and the season before it was 29
days. Thus, the Isles will have had six extra days off compared to last season
at this point.
The days off come with a price though --they will play the final 70 games in 147
days --the shortest time to play the final 70 since the season switched to 82
games.
Put another way--the Isles season starts and end on the first Friday of October
and April respectively. That's 183 days. The Isles will play on 82 of those
dates and be off on 101 of them.
In the first 36 days of the season, the Isles played on 12 days and had 24 days
off.
In the final 147 days, they will play on 70 days and have 77 days off. Four of
those off days come during the All-Star Break, another three come around
Christmas. Other than that, it's basically every other day for the next 21
weeks, beginning Saturday.

As I was looking at the numbers of how many players played for Al in his almost 19 full seasons with the team he coached 195 players.
If you have followed the Esoteric you will know that Ben Walter was the 416th player to ever lace up the skates.
416 players total for the Islanders minus 195 of them that played for Al Arbour. That leaves a total of 221 players that never played for Al.
Consider this...Al didn't coach the first year of the team. He "retired" for 2 1/2 years and then there was about 13 months until Mike Milbury stepped into the picture. You have to figure that most of the players were the same during the time of Al's absence. You include all the players he also gets credit for when he coached on Saturday and the following paragraph is that much more inspiring....

Walsh and Stevens appeared in a game against Minnesota--all three games with the NoStars were after the coaching change.
Helminen appeared in two games against the Kings-- the second game of the season against LA was Arbour's first home game.

Islanders Esoteric #11 Part 1
What a game! What a night! Thanks to Ted Nolan for coming up with this idea. I don’t care how many of the naysayers say this was a marketing ploy – the time I got to spend with my daughter at this game teaching her about my passion is priceless. She has been jibber jabbering about it all weekend long. I don’t think she has put down the Arbour 1,500 promotional banner since we got home on Saturday.
Let me change speed here for a second and congratulate Ben Walters on his debut being the 416th player to ever lace up the skates and play for the New York Islanders. Ben could be the next Derek Armstrong. As Ben did on this historic night, Derek, now with the LA Kings, made his NHL debut in Arbour’s 1,499th game way back on April 15th 1994 at Florida.

Captain's Corner Drill
The NHL has a big problem on its hands.......
Keep in mind - you are looking at stats with ANNOUNCED attendance -
which is lies and fiction wrapped together.....
On Thursday - we would be lucky to say 7,500 people were in the Isles building. Maybe less. All I know is that it took 13 seconds to leave the parking lot and the concourse bathroom had a VERY VERY SHORT line in between the 2nd/3rd periods.....
which are leading indicators of the true attendance.
Agree that we get hammered a lot - But the Ranger$ lie about their attendance - or the "18,200" might mean tickets sold - but routinely there are a couple of thousand empty seats on any given night.
The fact that Colorado and Detroit no longer sell every game out is telling too. Detroit ( as per the article I posted) has a serious economic crisis due to the MASSIVE layoffs in the auto sector.
People losing jobs = no hockey tix sold.
Also, teams are pricing out the regular fans.
Winning cures a lot of ills. Buffalo went from being a team that had a half empty building to a full shop now - with a re-invigorated team - and the city rallied behind it.
We sort of did the same thing in 2002/03 after that first year of Laviolette - we sold out about a dozen or so games....and just were not able to sustain that momentum.
Minnesota is the hottest ticket......and we all know that this was not the case when the team was in Bloomington. But I have been to Minnesota a few times this year - and they are the RAGE up there....
I don't care so much as to what the others do - but very concerned about us.
Most of my boyhood friends live in Maryland, Upstate, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A whole generation of Isles fans who cannot buy season tix.....they no longer live here.
WE have to cultivate the next generation. How do we do that ?

I still think its funny how my kids cannot IMAGINE that this Isles team was ever any good. My son was 2 years old last time they won a playoff series. ( 17 yrs old now) sorry for repeating this for the 1940th time - but to me - its the most telling reason why we are what we are with his generation of potential Isles fans......

which is lies and fiction wrapped together.....
On Thursday - we would be lucky to say 7,500 people were in the Isles building. Maybe less. All I know is that it took 13 seconds to leave the parking lot and the concourse bathroom had a VERY VERY SHORT line in between the 2nd/3rd periods.....
which are leading indicators of the true attendance.
Agree that we get hammered a lot - But the Ranger$ lie about their attendance - or the "18,200" might mean tickets sold - but routinely there are a couple of thousand empty seats on any given night.
The fact that Colorado and Detroit no longer sell every game out is telling too. Detroit ( as per the article I posted) has a serious economic crisis due to the MASSIVE layoffs in the auto sector.
People losing jobs = no hockey tix sold.
Also, teams are pricing out the regular fans.
Winning cures a lot of ills. Buffalo went from being a team that had a half empty building to a full shop now - with a re-invigorated team - and the city rallied behind it.
We sort of did the same thing in 2002/03 after that first year of Laviolette - we sold out about a dozen or so games....and just were not able to sustain that momentum.
Minnesota is the hottest ticket......and we all know that this was not the case when the team was in Bloomington. But I have been to Minnesota a few times this year - and they are the RAGE up there....
I don't care so much as to what the others do - but very concerned about us.
Most of my boyhood friends live in Maryland, Upstate, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. A whole generation of Isles fans who cannot buy season tix.....they no longer live here.
WE have to cultivate the next generation. How do we do that ?

I still think its funny how my kids cannot IMAGINE that this Isles team was ever any good. My son was 2 years old last time they won a playoff series. ( 17 yrs old now) sorry for repeating this for the 1940th time - but to me - its the most telling reason why we are what we are with his generation of potential Isles fans......

Wow! What a night. While everyone else is busy congratulating Mike Sillinger on his 1,000th game, Islanders Esoteric would like to congratulate him on breaking into the top 100 all-time in NY Islander's Assists. He is now 1 Assist away from his 300th Career Assist.
Ricky breaks into the top 200 in all-time scoring tonight. I predicted earlier this year that Ricky will score a Game Winning Goal this year. Tonight he came close with a Game Winning Assist. His 8th Assist ties him with Kelly Hrudey at 4th in the All-Time Goalie scoring category. Kelly scored his 8 assists in 241 games and Rick has done is in 214 games. Rick is now 1 assist and 1 Point behind Chico Resch who had 9 Assists in 282 games. Of course the record stands with Mr. Bill Smith with a Goal and 12 Assists during his 675 game tenure with the Islanders.
I have to point out that if we manage to keep out of the penalty box we do pretty well for ourselves. Tonight we had 5 penalties for 10 minutes total. We appreciate your interest, and your support; and, as far as we are concerned, the more people that hear the story, the better. It is not a mater of IF someone else dies on this ski slope in similar circumstances; it is only a matter of WHEN, if indeed, it has not already occurred, while authorities turn a blind eye, and allow the ski operator to operate a summer ski operation, with seemingly no restrictions.
For fourteen years, the ski operator, fully supported by police, insisted that "absolutely nothing could happen to Duncan on the licensed ski slope"; the ski operator, fully supported by police, insisted the rented snowboard and boots had been returned, but could not provide supporting evidence.
For fourteen years, we were forced to live with their lies. When Duncan's body was found in 2003, we were relieved, because we believed that finally, with the body as evidence, authorities would have to conduct an effective investigation of death, and we would learn how/why Duncan died. We were wrong to make that assumption, and we were wrong to place our trust in authorities. Police lied about the location of the death site (placing Duncan outside the controlled ski area), and lied about the circumstances ("plunged with his snowboard into the free skiing area"). They refused to conduct an autopsy, but then falsified the death certificate, stating an autopsy had been conducted. Then, four days after we had been notified of the death, and just hours before our arrival in Innsbruck, they ordered the removal of his upper and lower jaws, for what they said was identification purposes. Thank goodness the pathologist refused to do this unnecessary and unethical procedure. As a parent, there is not much left after your child is dead, other than to be with them to say goodbye. I think if they had have succeeded in their attempt to mutilate Duncan's body, I would probably have killed someone!
The ski operator buried Duncan in 1989; police, coroner, prosecutor, and Minister of Justice buried the facts in 2003. In fact, there was NO investigation of death.
Inasmuch as it is a tragedy Duncan lost his life while innocently snowboarding on a ski slope which is licensed and regulated by state authorities, equally as tragic, and unjust, is the fact his death was not investigated. As bad as it is for the ski operator to have covered up the accident, in our view, it is far more serious when state authorities are complicit in the cover up.
In May 2006, we sent a detailed appeal to the Minister of Justice, requesting a re-opening of the investigation of death. As you know, she refused, defending the actions of authorities in carrying out the investigation of death, and defending the ski operator.
I have spent the past year, putting together an application to the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France), claiming violation of Article 2 (Right to Life), and Article 13 (Right to Effective Remedy. I was unable to research Austrian law because of my inability to communicate in German. However, I did do quite a lot or research through the UK website on Human Rights issues. It seems the ECHR gives a wide interpretation of "Right to Life", and includes in it the right to an effective investigation of death which occurs in suspicious circumstances in a regulated setting. In my mind, there is no question Duncan's death was "suspicious"; no question his death occurred in a state-regulated setting; and no question that his death was not investigated. So I am hopeful that I am able to convince the Court that the case needs to be heard. I understand it could take a while before the Court examines our documentation - - the wheels of justice turn slowly! Once they have reviewed it, they rule on whether it is admissible, and then whether it has merit. I hope it is before I am in a nursing home!
Some people ask why we do this, why we put ourselves through the work, frustration, stress, etc. I would say as much as anything, it is Duncan's spirit that drives it. I remember during his hockey-playing days, and how I'd always tell him that I wished he would not get into fights. His response was that I did not understand that there were times when you had to fight - to stand up for yourself, or your teammates; and that whether you "won" the fight was irrelevant, but it was important that you "show up".
So, while I recognize I am taking on the entire Austrian tourist industry, and my chances of "winning" against these formidable forces are slim, I feel it is important to "show up". As Duncan used to say, "The only time you fail, is if you don't try".
As to your question as to what we want - we don't want Duncan's death covered up; he has a right to an effective investigation of his death. We don't want anyone else to needlessly lose their life on this ski slope, all for the sake of "business". I wish there was a way to hold the ski operator accountable for Duncan's death, but, when he has the entire system covering for him, that is just not possible. As we see it, our only hope for any justice is to attempt to hold authorities to account for their complicity in the cover up of the facts related to Duncan's death.
The hockey community, and the media, have been our sole source of support throughout the eighteen years. I don't know if you know, but without the help of the hockey community, it is questionable as to if, or when, we would have located Duncan's car.
By the way, Roger Kortko lives here (has four daughters). He was interviewed for the Fifth Estate program (he lived with Duncan in Springfield in 1986-1987); I guess his interview was very good, but there just wasn't time within the program to air it. Duncan spent his last night with Roger and Donna in Fussen, Germany.
I have thought about contacting American media - "60 Minutes, and/or Dateline. Any thoughts on this?
No, we don't have any snow yet - in fact, it is the warmest Halloween I can remember - 11C! Our son lives in Vancouver, and usually rubs it in about how much better weather they have, but this year, he hasn't been able to do that! But, I'm sure that we will get the sow, and te cold weather soon enough!
We welcome any suggestions, advice, input you may be able to offer.

Reflections on Arbour
Just got an email from one of the guys that got me into hockey when I was a kid. We are both excited about this Saturday's game with Arbour behind the bench. I think his email sums up what Al has meant to us all:
<<< And Roger, I am bringing my kids to the game too. I know that they both have heard me many many times quote the great Al Arbour in terms of everyday life.... "One Shift at a time" "Win your shift - then win the next shift --- and that will add up to a victory..."
I want them to see for themselves what an influence Arbour has had in my life and that he is the greatest field general of them all in my book....

Roger Kortko Esoteric
Roger Kortko was the Islanders 6th pick, 126th overall in the 1982 Amateur Draft. He played with the Isles from 84/85 - 85/86. He became a free agent in July 1987.
One of the things that sticks out about Roger is that unlike most of today's Islanders he has played in 10 games in the playoffs while wearing an Islander sweater. In those 10 games he scored 3 assists and sat for 17 minutes. Not sure how the 17 minutes breaks down but he did drop the gloves with Lindsay Carson in Game 3 of the 1985 Quarterfinals on April 23rd.

Yeah, I am a bit late with this one. I just cant get myself excited after a loss, especially one like this one.
There has been a lot of chatter about hating the schedule makers with all th etime off we have had. I say we could use it right now with Berard and Bates out.

Forever1940 Stat Trick #9
An ugly game produces an interesting stat trick...
1. Carolina's 8 goals tied the club record for most goals since relocating from Hartford. (The Whalers scored 11 goals three times) It also equaled the most goals that the franchise has ever scored against the Isles (Hartford 8, Isles 2 in March 1989)
2. It's the worst home loss of the Nolan era. The Isles last lost by at least five goals at home on Jan 14, 2006 (8-1 to Vancouver)
3. Rod Brind'Amour now has three career hat tricks and two of them are against the Isles. Brind'Amour was the last 'Cane to record a hat trick against the Isles, on January 7, 2001. Brind'Amour now has 414 career goals, including 40 in 80 games played against the Islanders.
