Captain's Corner Drill

Game Notes:

Nice night out on Long Island.....

Crowd announced as a near sellout - I believe that you could find
about 2,000 seats unsold.....but a nice enough crowd for a November
Saturday night.

I think the worm has turned. New Jersey just does not seem to have a
very good team. I use the word "seem" - as the Devils sometime take
a bit to gel - and last year was the same story.

still, they are missing a lot of players over the years that just
can't be replaced...... Dano, Stevens, Neidermaier, Gomez to name a
few....with only Zach Parise who can be considered a real stud player
to come in.....

The reason why the Isles had no penalties tonight - was that they
threw (functionally) a no-hitter. They did not take the body nearly
as much tonight. that said - they did have a good forecheck and
played well on D and in nets. Just could not create much - as
neither could NJD either. Not saying the game was dull, but it was
about 3 notches down from the last two games I saw here at Nassau.

that said -

Take Two Points and call me in the morning.....

You know what they did well ? A lot.

They controlled the pace of the game, they played solid "D" and got
some clutch saves from DiPietro. I thought Brodeur was equally
solid...and both had to make tough saves. DP had to come up big late
in the third.

They go on the road for four games. PHI/PIT/NJD and NYR.

This team is competing. No K V A S H I N G --- NO dipsy doodle
Euros..... and they are fun to watch.

Time for them to make a statement and go win these games !

Islanders Esoteric #13

Ok, no 1,000th game celebration? No, Arbour night? No, Isles - Ranger rivalry game? It was Military Appreciation Night - so there was some meaning to the game.

Our very own, "Save the Last Chicken Dance" blogger, Peter Flynn (USN) made the jumbotron tonight along with his brother, Kevin Flynn (USMC).

Wow. Esoteric complete by 10:30

Satan. 3 Games. 3 Game Winning Goals. His esoteric will include names of the Core of the Four tonight.

No penalties tonight. The last time we did that was January 29, 2002 versus the Devils.

I cant wait to read the Stat Tricks tonight. Should be some fun numbers there.

I hope our Captain is OK. Seemed like a lot of the guys were slow getting up tonight. Newsday's Logan is saying that a team official said Bill will be evaluated on Monday.

Nice shiner Martinek had, too.

Speaking of Martinek. I find I can not support the movement to make him an all-star. Call me selfish, but I do have good reason. I feel that Radek only has a certain number of games to play for us this season before he gets his annual season ending injury. I do not want one of those games or the injury to come because of or at the all-star game. Yes, I say this all tongue-in-cheek but I do base this on the facts and Radeks' time on the IR in the past.

Damn! Rangers won in a shootout. So not only do they win they also gave away a point to a conference rival.

Watching the Oilers - Flames game. It is cool hearing Nystrom's name being talked about on the TV.

THE ESOTERIC

Vasicek is playing in his 13th game along with the other new-comers - Comrie, Guerin, Fedotenko, and Sutton - this group is all tied with Ted Crowley, Pat Conacher and Craig Darby at #306th all time in games played. His 5th goal is tied with 12 others include Steve Webb at #174th. He is tied with 7 points at #236th with John Tucker, Andrey Vasilyev, Brett "Don't Hall of Fame My Bro" Lindros, and Branislav Mezei.

Satan. Let's talk about the Game Winning Goal first. It is his 7th with the Islanders. There has only been 53 other players to ever get 7 game winning goals or more. He is tied with 6 others including the likes of Stefan Persson, Ed Westfall, Jean Potvin, Greg Gilbert, Mike Peca, and Tom Fitzgerald all ranked at #46th all-time. Not mentioned too much is that it was a Power Play Goal. This is Miro's 25th PPG with the Islanders. He is tied with Bobby Nystrom and Kenny Jonsson at #26 on the list of power play goal scorers. The goal itself is his 67th and ties him with Brad Isbister at #41. The 136th point lands him at #53 all-time a mere 3 points behind Bryan Smolinski. He did all this in 176 games tied with Glenn Healy at #97th.

Chris Campoli scored 2 Assists tonight in his 144th game. He is at #109th all-time - a game behind Mike Kaszycki. The Assists, Chris's 46th and 47th has him jumping over Mike York and Bob Lorimer in the standings for #83rd on the assist list. The 2 points gained tonight gives him 59 points total and #93rd tied with Brian Spencer on the all-time list.

Park had an assist tonight. It is his 20th Assist and is good enough to keep him tied with Andy Hilbert at the #129th spot. The point is his 31st and ties him with erstwhile first rounder David Chyzowski at #132nd all-time. Richard has played in 95 games with the Islander tying him with Mike Sillinger at #140th all-time.

Hunter is trying to maintain Miro's pace and does so tonight with his assist although Trent has done it playing in 81 more games than Miro. Trent has played in 257 games, one game behind Benoit Hogue on the all-time games played list. The assist is his 67th lands him at #67th all-time. 67 - 67, yes, that's not a typo. He is 1 assist behind Brad Isbister (2 Assists behind Satan). Hunter's 132nd point lands him at #56th, two points behind Tom Kurvers (4 points behind Satan).

ESOTERIC PENALTIES
NONE. Yes, I said NONE. No penalties taken by the Islanders.

Forever1940's Stat Trick

1. The first place Isles have now won consecutive games that they trailed after
two periods (both in regulation time). They are now 2-3-0 when trailing after
40 minutes and, going back to last January, are 7-11-1 in the last nineteen
games that they've trailed after two periods.

2. Miro Satan now has 26 career goals against the Rangers in his career -- more
than any other NHLer against the Rangers since Satan entered the league.

3. The Isles are now 8-1-2 in their last 11 games against the Rangers, matching
the best 11-game stretches in club history (done most recently during the
dynasty days).

and some more...

4. Chris Drury's pp goal was only the fourth goal of any kind that the Rangers
have scored in the second period this season.

5. Is it the return of Fort Neverlose? The Isles are 6-2 at home, and have
earned 12 points in their first eight home games. This equals their best home
start since opening 7-1 at home in 1986.

6. The Rangers are 0-5-1 on the road. It's the first time in 55 years that the
Rangers have only one point in their first six road games.

This ridiculously strange schedule has had the Isles playing so infrequently
that it almost seems like they are not in the NHL. In fact, when the Isles take
to the ice on Saturday, it will be 5 weeks and 1 day (36 days) after they opened
the season in Buffalo.

Only once before have the Isles taken that long to reach game 13. In 1999, the
Isles took 39 games between the opener and game 13-- but that season featured
eight days between games 1 and 2.

How does this compare to recent seasons? The inactivity is not an illusion.
Last year, game 13 was 30 days after the opener and the season before it was 29
days. Thus, the Isles will have had six extra days off compared to last season
at this point.

The days off come with a price though --they will play the final 70 games in 147
days --the shortest time to play the final 70 since the season switched to 82
games.

Put another way--the Isles season starts and end on the first Friday of October
and April respectively. That's 183 days. The Isles will play on 82 of those
dates and be off on 101 of them.

In the first 36 days of the season, the Isles played on 12 days and had 24 days
off.

In the final 147 days, they will play on 70 days and have 77 days off. Four of
those off days come during the All-Star Break, another three come around
Christmas. Other than that, it's basically every other day for the next 21
weeks, beginning Saturday.

ISLANDER ESOTERIC

Hunter and Satan are keeping pace with each other as the active non-injured leaders in a few categories. Hunter on the one hand has played in 256 games with the team and is 2 back from Benoit Hogue at #67th all-time. On the other hand, Miro Satan is at #97th all-time with his 175 games played only a game played back from Glen Healy.

In the Goals column, Trent is keeping pace with Miro. Trent has 65 goals to Miro's 66 Goals. They hold the #43rd and #42nd spots respectively. Obviously, Trent is 1 Goal behing Miro. While Miro is 1 Goal back from tying Brad Isbister.

There is more of a disparity in the points department. Miro is 4 points ahead of Trent. Miro has 135 Points tied with Brad Isbister at #53. To note here: Miro is playing in his 175th game - Isbister took 247 Games to get 135 Points. Hunter, in his 256th game, now has 131 Points and is alone at the #56th position - a mere 3-Points back from Tom Kurvers.

OBTW, Miro's Goal was a game winner. His second in as many nights and he is tied with Brad Dalgarno and Mike Kaszycki with 6 Games Winners each at the #53rd spot on the all-time GWG list.

Fedotenko had a 2 point night with his Goal and Assist. The Goal was his 5th with the Islanders and ties him with 10 others for #174th spot. The Assist is his 7th and ties him with Captain Bill Guerin and 6 others at #205th. The 2 Points, his 11th and 12th gives him a ties with 8 others including Captain Bill Guerin at the #195th spot. The Goal was a Power Play Goal and Ruslan is the 98th player to ever score 3 Power Play Goals with the team along with 7 others. He did all this in 12 Games Played. He is still above #300 in the ranking in Games Played.

Comrie had a 2 point night as well with his 2 Assists. He is also tied with "Tank" in Games Played. His Assist, though, is his 10th with the team and lands him formly at #179th all-time with 10 others. The 2-Points that he got, his 14th and 15th, ties him at #176th with Witt, RYan Smyth, Kirk Muller, Michel "The Other" Bergeron, and Doug Rombough.

The Current Bergeron with the team has been here for 33 Games and is tied with Reed Larson, Kevin Millerm and Felix Potvin for the #246th spot on the all-time GP roster. His Assist ties him at 18 Assists with Tom Miller, Bill Muckalt, and Barry Richter for the #134th spot. His points ties hime with erstwhile Islander and current Coyote, no Senator, no - isn't Randy Robitaill in the AHL now - with 26 Points and #139th overall.

Park Sunsengnim, as I would have called him in my 6 years in Korea or Mr. Park as I would call him here on Long Island has played in his 94th game and is tied with Mr. "1,002", and Jason Weimer at #140th. His 19th Assist is good enough for #130th overall and ties him with Hubie McDonough, Wendel Clark, and the erstwhile Islander, Randy Robitaille. He is in sole possession of the #133rd spot with 30 Points and is 1 behind 1st round draft pick, David Chyzowski.

PENALTIES
Only penalty stat that stands out, perhaps is Trent's 82 minute of penalty time ties him at #125th with Simon and Ricky.

Ilsanders Esoteric #11 - Part 3

As I was looking at the numbers of how many players played for Al in his almost 19 full seasons with the team he coached 195 players.

If you have followed the Esoteric you will know that Ben Walter was the 416th player to ever lace up the skates.

416 players total for the Islanders minus 195 of them that played for Al Arbour.  That leaves a total of 221 players that never played for Al.

Consider this...Al didn't coach the first year of the team.  He "retired" for 2 1/2 years and then there was about 13 months until Mike Milbury stepped into the picture.  You have to figure that most of the players were the same during the time of Al's absence.  You include all the players he also gets credit for when he coached on Saturday and the following paragraph is that much more inspiring....

What that means is....and I haven't worked the numbers yet....it means that in the ten years of Milbury's reign we had almost as many players skate on our ice as did in the 2 decades when Al was with the team.

Arbour = 19 Years = 195 players
Milbury = 10 years - 221 players (of course these are estimated)

Al Arbour - 195

Thanks to Forever1940:

The three maybe's you cited all played for Arbour.

Walsh and Stevens appeared in a game against Minnesota--all three games with the NoStars were after the coaching change.

Helminen appeared in two games against the Kings-- the second game of the season against LA was Arbour's first home game.

Islanders Esoteric Part 2

Some misc. stats….

13 players this year have played in all 11 games.

From the overlooked department is Mike Sillinger’s 300th Career Assist in his 1,001st game.

In part 1, I mentioned Ben Walter. How cool must it be for him to get a chance to play 2 minutes and 59 seconds under Al Arbour….I say bring all back so Ben can get an even three minutes of playing time under Al. I bring this up because guy’s like Newsday’s Baumbach really don’t get it when comparing Al Arbour to all these random baseball players. Please – Fisk isn’t even worthy to wash Al’s feet.

We won 34 out of 59 face offs and only had 2 penalties. Wait is that a typo? 2 Penalties? Eric Furlatt must like us.

Chris Campoli is high time ice time guy with 24:13 on the ice.

Esoteric Scoring Line

Hunter – Sillinger
Satan – Vasicek – Sutton
Satan – Bergeron – Park

Esoteric Streaks

Hunter has 2goals and 1 assist in the last 3 games.
Satan is smoking with 3 goals and 5 assists in his last 5 games.
Sillinger in his last 3 games has 1 goal and 2 assists.

Esoteric

Hunter playing in his 255th game is tied with Turgeon at the #67 spot in all-time games played. Trent is 9 games behind Radek for the active lead amongst active, non-injured Islanders.

Trent is playing frontsies – backsides with Miro Satan for the lead in all-time Goals scored amongst active players. As of right now, Trent has 64 goals which is 1 goal behind Miro, who scored twice and jumped over Trent in the standings during the Al Arbour game. Trent stands at #43 all time while Miro is at #42 all time with his 65 Goals, only 2 goals behind Brad Isbister.

These two are also playing cat and mouse in points as well. Miro’s 2-point night leapfrogs him over Hunter and in a tie with Tom Kurvers at #54 with 134 Points. This is 4-points ahead of Hunter who is at #56th with his 130 points.

The second goal of the evening by Satan was the Game Winner. It is Miro’s 5th game winner for the Islanders and lands him in a tie at #56th with Adrian Aucoin, Ralph Stewart, Andre St/ Laurent, Brad Lauer, and Gino Odjick.

In his 1,001th game, Sillinger has played in his 93rd game with the Islanders for #141st tying him with Richard Park. His 37th Assist ties him at #99th with Billy Carroll. He is tied with Trevor Linden and Gord Dineen with 64 points and the #84 spot overall in points.

Vasicek and Sutton have now played in 11 games as Islanders. There are 11 players tied with 11 games at the #316th spot in all-times games played including Mike Hordy, who took the ice to honor Al Arbour.

Vasicek’s Assist, his 2nd is #275th all time while the point he scored is his 6th and places him at #240 all time. Both of these positions ties him with a dozen or so other players.

This brings me to Sutton. Andy has only 3 Assists with the team which means he also has 3 points. He is at #257th on the Assists List and #277 on the Points list. He is also tied with a dozen or so players in both thos categories as well.

Bergeron is now in sole possession of the #249th spot having played in his 32nd game with the Islanders. He is 1 game played behind the third Potvin aka Felix. His assist tonight gets him 17th with the team and the #137th spot overall. He is tied with 4 others including Roger Kortko and Marc Bergevin.

Bergevin not Bergeron!!!!!

Richard Park closes out the Esoteric with his 18th Assist. He is at the #133rd spot tied with Bill Muckalt, Tom Miller and Barry richter. The point gives him his 25th and the #142nd spot in the company of Sean Hill and Dave McLlwain. He has 93 games with the Islanders under his belt and the #141st spot tied with Sillinger.

ESOTERIC PENALTIES

WOW! Only two penalties that occurred early in the first period:

Gervais ties Sergei Nemchinov with 46 PIMs and #176 all-time

Witt is in sole possession of #94th spot with his 139 PIMS. He is 1 minute behind Uwe Krupp, Janne Niinimaa, and Jason Weimer.

Islanders Esoteric #11 Part 1

What a game! What a night! Thanks to Ted Nolan for coming up with this idea. I don’t care how many of the naysayers say this was a marketing ploy – the time I got to spend with my daughter at this game teaching her about my passion is priceless. She has been jibber jabbering about it all weekend long. I don’t think she has put down the Arbour 1,500 promotional banner since we got home on Saturday.

Let me change speed here for a second and congratulate Ben Walters on his debut being the 416th player to ever lace up the skates and play for the New York Islanders. Ben could be the next Derek Armstrong. As Ben did on this historic night, Derek, now with the LA Kings, made his NHL debut in Arbour’s 1,499th game way back on April 15th 1994 at Florida.

Ben also joins these other 194 players who have played for Al as NY Islanders:

Aaron Johnson, Adam Creighton, Alan Kerr, Alex McKendry, Anders Kallur, Andre St. Laurent, Andy Hilbert, Andy Sutton, Ari Haanpaa, Ben Walter, Benoit Hogue, Bert Marshall, Bill Berg, Bill Geurin, Bill MacMillan, Billy Carroll, Billy Harris, Billy Smith, Bob Bassen, Bob Bourne, Bob Cook, Bob Lorimer, Bob McGill, Bob Nystrom, Brad Dalgarno, Brad Lauer, Brad Turner, Brendon Witt, Brent Grieve, Brent Sutter, Brent Sutter, Brian Marchinko, Brian Mullen, Brian Spencer, Bruce Affleck, Bruno Gervais, Bryan Lefley, Bryan Trottier, Chris Campoli, Chris Luongo, Chris Pryor, Chris Simon, Clark Gillies, Claude Loiselle, Craig Cameron, Craig Ludwig, Dale Henry, Dale Kushner, Dan Plante, Daniel Marois, Danny Lorenz, Darcy Regier ,Darius Kasparaitis ,Dave Chyzowski, Dave Fortier, Dave Hudson, Dave Langevin ,Dave Lewis ,Dave McLlwain, Dave Salvian, David Maley, David Volek, Dean Chynoweth, Denis Potvin, Dennis Vaske, Derek Armstrong, Derek King, Derek Laxdal, Don Maloney, Doug Crossman, Doug Rombough, Duane Sutter, Ed Westfall, Ernie Hicke, Garry Howatt, Garth MacGuigan, Gary Nylund, George Maneluk, Gerald Diduck, Germain Gagnon, Gerry Desjardins, Gerry Hart, Gilles Thibaudeau, Glenn "Chico" Resch, Glenn Healy, Glenn Johannesen, Goran Hogosta, Gord Dineen, Gord Lane, Graeme Townshend, Greg Gilbert, Greg Parks, Hector Marini, Hubie McDonough, Iain Fraser, Jamie McLennan, Jari Gronstrand, Jason Simon, Jean Potvin, Jean-Paul Parise, Jeff Finley, Jeff Hackett, Jeff Norton, Joe Day, Joe Reekie, John Tonelli, John Tucker, Josef Vasicek, Jude Drouin, Keith Acton, Kelly Hrudey, Ken Baumgartner, Ken Leiter, Ken Morrow, Kevin Devine, Lorne Henning, Marc Bergevin, Mark Bergeron, Mark Fitzpatrick, Mark Hamway, Marty McInnis, Mats Hallin, Michel Bergeron, Mick Vukota, Mike Bossy, Mike Comrie, Mike Hordy, Mike Kaszycki, Mike McEwen, Mike Sillinger, Mike Stevens, Mike Walsh, Mikko Makela, Miro Satan, Neal Coulter, Neil Hawryliw, Neil Nicholson, Pat LaFontaine, Pat Price, Patrick Flatley, Paul Boutilier, Paul Gagne, Paul Guay, Pierre Turgeon, Radek Martinek, Raimo Helminen, Ralph Stewart, Randy Boyd, Randy Hillier, Randy Johnston, Randy Wood, Ray Ferraro, Reed Larson, Rich Pilon, Richard Brodeur, Richard Kromm, Richard Park, Richie Hansen, Rick Green, Rob DiMaio, Robert "Butch" Goring, Rod Dallman, Roger Kortko, Rollie Melanson, Ron Handy, Ron Hextall, Ruslan Fedetenko, Scott Howson, Scott Lachance, Scott Scissons, Shawn Byram, Shawn Evans, Stefan Persson, Steve Junker, Steve Konroyd, Steve Tambellini, Steve Thomas, Steve Weeks, Tom Draper, Tom Fitzgerald, Tom Kurvers, Tom Miller, Tomas Jonsson, Travis Green, Trent Hunter, Uwe Krupp, Vern Smith, Vic "Skeeter" Teal, Vladimir Malakhov, Walt Ledingham, Wayne McBean, Wayne Merrick, Yan Kaminsky, Yvon Vautour, Zigmund Palffy.

The things to note here as there are a lot of names to go through. I wasn’t able to decide if Mike Stevens, Mike Walsh, or Raimo Helminen actually played a game for Al during the 1988 – 1989 season. I know that Rod Dallman did not play for him in a regular season game but did lace them up for Al in a playoff game the following season. There could be other players that only played in the playoffs for Al but I do not have that information.
