Hi Roger,

We have no problem with the headline you chose; and please don't feel you are out of line in asking us anything. We appreciate your interest, and your support; and, as far as we are concerned, the more people that hear the story, the better. It is not a mater of IF someone else dies on this ski slope in similar circumstances; it is only a matter of WHEN, if indeed, it has not already occurred, while authorities turn a blind eye, and allow the ski operator to operate a summer ski operation, with seemingly no restrictions.

For fourteen years, the ski operator, fully supported by police, insisted that "absolutely nothing could happen to Duncan on the licensed ski slope"; the ski operator, fully supported by police, insisted the rented snowboard and boots had been returned, but could not provide supporting evidence.

For fourteen years, we were forced to live with their lies. When Duncan's body was found in 2003, we were relieved, because we believed that finally, with the body as evidence, authorities would have to conduct an effective investigation of death, and we would learn how/why Duncan died. We were wrong to make that assumption, and we were wrong to place our trust in authorities. Police lied about the location of the death site (placing Duncan outside the controlled ski area), and lied about the circumstances ("plunged with his snowboard into the free skiing area"). They refused to conduct an autopsy, but then falsified the death certificate, stating an autopsy had been conducted. Then, four days after we had been notified of the death, and just hours before our arrival in Innsbruck, they ordered the removal of his upper and lower jaws, for what they said was identification purposes. Thank goodness the pathologist refused to do this unnecessary and unethical procedure. As a parent, there is not much left after your child is dead, other than to be with them to say goodbye. I think if they had have succeeded in their attempt to mutilate Duncan's body, I would probably have killed someone!

The ski operator buried Duncan in 1989; police, coroner, prosecutor, and Minister of Justice buried the facts in 2003. In fact, there was NO investigation of death.

Inasmuch as it is a tragedy Duncan lost his life while innocently snowboarding on a ski slope which is licensed and regulated by state authorities, equally as tragic, and unjust, is the fact his death was not investigated. As bad as it is for the ski operator to have covered up the accident, in our view, it is far more serious when state authorities are complicit in the cover up.

In May 2006, we sent a detailed appeal to the Minister of Justice, requesting a re-opening of the investigation of death. As you know, she refused, defending the actions of authorities in carrying out the investigation of death, and defending the ski operator.

I have spent the past year, putting together an application to the European Court of Human Rights (Strasbourg, France), claiming violation of Article 2 (Right to Life), and Article 13 (Right to Effective Remedy. I was unable to research Austrian law because of my inability to communicate in German. However, I did do quite a lot or research through the UK website on Human Rights issues. It seems the ECHR gives a wide interpretation of "Right to Life", and includes in it the right to an effective investigation of death which occurs in suspicious circumstances in a regulated setting. In my mind, there is no question Duncan's death was "suspicious"; no question his death occurred in a state-regulated setting; and no question that his death was not investigated. So I am hopeful that I am able to convince the Court that the case needs to be heard. I understand it could take a while before the Court examines our documentation - - the wheels of justice turn slowly! Once they have reviewed it, they rule on whether it is admissible, and then whether it has merit. I hope it is before I am in a nursing home!

Some people ask why we do this, why we put ourselves through the work, frustration, stress, etc. I would say as much as anything, it is Duncan's spirit that drives it. I remember during his hockey-playing days, and how I'd always tell him that I wished he would not get into fights. His response was that I did not understand that there were times when you had to fight - to stand up for yourself, or your teammates; and that whether you "won" the fight was irrelevant, but it was important that you "show up".

So, while I recognize I am taking on the entire Austrian tourist industry, and my chances of "winning" against these formidable forces are slim, I feel it is important to "show up". As Duncan used to say, "The only time you fail, is if you don't try".

As to your question as to what we want - we don't want Duncan's death covered up; he has a right to an effective investigation of his death. We don't want anyone else to needlessly lose their life on this ski slope, all for the sake of "business". I wish there was a way to hold the ski operator accountable for Duncan's death, but, when he has the entire system covering for him, that is just not possible. As we see it, our only hope for any justice is to attempt to hold authorities to account for their complicity in the cover up of the facts related to Duncan's death.

The hockey community, and the media, have been our sole source of support throughout the eighteen years. I don't know if you know, but without the help of the hockey community, it is questionable as to if, or when, we would have located Duncan's car.

By the way, Roger Kortko lives here (has four daughters). He was interviewed for the Fifth Estate program (he lived with Duncan in Springfield in 1986-1987); I guess his interview was very good, but there just wasn't time within the program to air it. Duncan spent his last night with Roger and Donna in Fussen, Germany.

I have thought about contacting American media - "60 Minutes, and/or Dateline. Any thoughts on this?

No, we don't have any snow yet - in fact, it is the warmest Halloween I can remember - 11C! Our son lives in Vancouver, and usually rubs it in about how much better weather they have, but this year, he hasn't been able to do that! But, I'm sure that we will get the sow, and te cold weather soon enough!

Reflections on Arbour

Just got an email from one of the guys that got me into hockey when I was a kid. We are both excited about this Saturday's game with Arbour behind the bench. I think his email sums up what Al has meant to us all:

Roger Kortko Esoteric

Roger Kortko was the Islanders 6th pick, 126th overall in the 1982 Amateur Draft. He played with the Isles from 84/85 - 85/86. He became a free agent in July 1987.

One of the things that sticks out about Roger is that unlike most of today's Islanders he has played in 10 games in the playoffs while wearing an Islander sweater. In those 10 games he scored 3 assists and sat for 17 minutes. Not sure how the 17 minutes breaks down but he did drop the gloves with Lindsay Carson in Game 3 of the 1985 Quarterfinals on April 23rd.

Forever1940 Stat Trick #9

An ugly game produces an interesting stat trick...

1. Carolina's 8 goals tied the club record for most goals since relocating from Hartford. (The Whalers scored 11 goals three times) It also equaled the most goals that the franchise has ever scored against the Isles (Hartford 8, Isles 2 in March 1989)

2. It's the worst home loss of the Nolan era. The Isles last lost by at least five goals at home on Jan 14, 2006 (8-1 to Vancouver)

3. Rod Brind'Amour now has three career hat tricks and two of them are against the Isles. Brind'Amour was the last 'Cane to record a hat trick against the Isles, on January 7, 2001. Brind'Amour now has 414 career goals, including 40 in 80 games played against the Islanders.

October to Remember!

As the Isles continue to enjoy this really long break (they've played as many games as the Rockies have this month - 8), a couple of notes on the month:

The Isles have clinched a winning record for the second straight October (5-3-0 with 1 to play this year after going 5-4-2 last month) -- (winning meaning more points than games played). If the first time they've done it back-2-back since 2000 (4-3-2-0 on their way to a 21-win season) and 2001 (9-0-1-1). Before that, you'd have to go back to the mid 80's to find consecutive winning Octobers.

The Isles will have a winning record at the Coliseum for a fourth consecutive season --they hadn't done that since five straight winning Octobers from 1984 to 1988.

The Isles have six points in their first four home games for the fourth consecutive season. The Isles have won their first four home games twice and gone 3-0-1 three other times, but they haven't done better than six points in the first four at home since October 1984.

If the Isles can beat Carolina Saturday, they'll finish October with 6 wins -- a total reached in October only once (in 2001) since October 1992.

Reverse Stats - What do they mean?

I have been a big proponent of reverse stats and magic numbers when following the Islanders for a long time. To me, it makes it so much more fun watching the numbers countdown as the season wind down.

The Isles have won 5 and have 10 points. The Rags have 5 points with only 2 victories.

The Isles are in 5th place and the Rags are in 14th place in the conference and, yes, it is still early.

Having 5 points on the Rags may seem pretty impressive but what the stats from your daily newspaper don't show you is what the numbers really mean.

The Rangers can score a total of 153 points since they have "lost" 11 points. What this means for the Islanders is that they have to win 154 points in order to finish ahead of the Rags, in other words the Isles magic number stands at 144 points or 72 wins.

The part that scares me this year is that going into the final 4 days of the season, the Islanders will play the Rangers in a home and home to finish the season. These two games are in reality worth 8 points as winning the 2 points keeps the other team from gaining them also. The final kicker is that the Rags have a final game on Sunday, April 6th versus the Devils.

How ironic would it be if the Rangers are in the same boat as the Isles were this past season?

The last 4 days of the Islanders season versus the Rags are worth 10 points.

So those 5 points we have now don't seem so impressive, do they?

Bryan Smolinski celebrated his 1,000th NHL game Monday night, taking the
opening faceoff in the Montreal Canadiens' game against the Boston Bruins at the
Bell Centre.

"My first game was my biggest highlight," said Smolinski, whose career began
March 27, 1993 for the Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins. "The coolest
thing was walking through the crowd in the old Boston Garden.

"You had to be humbled by it." Smolinski, a native of Toledo, Ohio, went on
to play for Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Chicago
and Vancouver before signing as a free agent with Montreal in the summer.

He became the 220th player to reach 1,000 games, and is the second Canadien
to reach the plateau this season. Defenceman Roman Hamrlik reached the
milestone in the team's season opener.

Smolinski played 227 games for the Isles after being acquired with Andreas
Johansson for Darius Kasparaitis , going 57-82-139. Smoke is currently ranked
at #78th all time in games played with the Isles, 15 GP ahead of Ricky. In
Goals he is tied with Kenny Jonsson at #47, he is 1 Goal behind Bates. Those
82 assists ranks him at #58, a mere 3 assists behind Berard. The Points
lands him at #51 a total of 31 points behind Bates. He has 108 Penalty minutes
for the #106th spot. Satan is closing in fast and will tie Smoke if he gets
6 more PIMs. Bryan scored 19 Power Play Goals 4 ahead of Hunter and Berard
at #33. He never scored a Short Handed Goal. He is currentlytied with
Berard at the #44th spot with 8 Game Winning Goals

Since the above new guys pretty much assumed the roll of the former guys, I did a little comparison. I would have done Sim/Asham as well, but that just wasn't in the cards.

Our new guys have combined for 14 goals, 14 assists for 28 points in 29
games played.

Our former guys have combined for 7 goals, 12 assists and 19 points in 31 games. Please note that our new guys have also scored 6 PP goals compared to 1 for the old regime, and 5 Game Winning goals as opposed to none for the old guys. Please also further note than none of our new guys have the luxury of playing with names like Sakic, Hedjuk, Stastny, Ovechkin, Sundin, etc.

And heres another important tidbit of info - the 07/08 Compen$ation for the old guys is $18,500,000 while our new crew is making just about half at $9,350,000.

What? A week off?

This bizarre schedule to start the season continues with the Isles now having an entire week off before hosting Carolina on Saturday night. It's not the longest in-season break the Isles have ever had, but it is one of the longest, particularly after you discount All-Star breaks, Olympics, Challenge Cups, and the 1992 mini-strike.

In 1999, the Isles opened the season in Tampa on October 2 and then didn't play again until hosting Colorado on October 10.

The longest break was over Christmas 1975, when the Isles went 9 days between games.

The Hurricanes btw will play three other games in the interim (Mon-Vancouver, Wed- Buffalo, Fri - Montreal, all at home) before journeying to Long Island.

Forever1940's Stat Trick

1. Coming 48 hours after he became the first Islander captain to record a hat trick in 13 years, Bill Guerin is the first Islander captain to score in overtime since Michael Peca scored with 9 seconds left in overtime in Philadelphia on February 12, 2002 for a 1-0 Islander victory and a shutout for GM Garth Snow. (Yashin also scored in ot that season, but never did so as the captain)

2. Guerin's goal, at 4:56 of overtime, is the latest goal the Islanders ever scored in overtime in a regular season game, breaking a record set by Stefan Persson (4:54) in the Isles' second overtime victory, in 1983. Anaheim's Peter Douris scored against the Isles at 4:59 of overtime in November of 1995.

3. The Islanders have eight "pure" overtime wins over the Devils, plus three more in shootouts. They're "after 60" record is 11-7-16 vs. the Devils, and have more ot goals (8) and ot/so wins (11) against NJ than any other opponent.

Bill Guerin scored his first three goals for the Islanders in their 5-2 win over the Capitals in Washington on Thursday night. It was the ninth regular-season hat trick of Guerin’s NHL career. The Islanders are the sixth different team for which Guerin has recorded a regular-season hat trick, an NHL record. He’s also scored three goals in a game for the Devils (once), Bruins (twice), Stars (three times), Blues (once) and Sharks (once).

Guerin’s only hat trick in the playoffs was for not for any of the six teams for which he’s had one in the regular season. He scored three goals for the Oilers in a playoff game on April 18, 2000.

Four players have had a regular-season hat trick for five different NHL teams: Eddie Shack, Ivan Boldirev, Tony McKegney and Brendan Shanahan.

Take this afternoon for example. At 3pm (ET), NHL Network will re-air the first Stanley Cup Final game in Isles history--game 1 against Philadelphia. Look for Denis Potvin to do something in that game that had never been done before.

How exciting have the last two games have been? I have this theory I call “The Rule of Three.’ It means when the Isles scored 3 goals or more they will generally win. It is not a steadfast rule but it is a good rule of thumb.

The other exciting this is that our Captain has started to make an impact. 4 Goals in the last two games. 3 of the goals have been on the Power Play. 1 of the Goals was an OT Game Winner. Oh yeah, did I mention he scored a Hat Trick? The Islanders have now had 160 Hat Tricks in their history. Bill becomes the 46th player to ever score a Hat Trick for the NY Islanders.

Comrie and Berard have 2 Game Winning Goals between them for the other 4 wins.

Things atop of the RSL standings remain consistent: Salavat Yulaev did even more to prove that an offseason shopping spree can indeed do a team good by posting 2 commanding wins over Spartak and Sibir to cement their grasp on the leading position in the standings. SKA are surprisingly 2nd with CSKA and Metallurg Mg deadlocked for the 3rd spot, the former proving last season's success wasn't a fluke and the latter looking to regain the success they lacked in the unstable regular season of the 2006-07 campaign, which still ended in a championship. Both teams have been putting up good results with CSKA picking up points in 7 games in a row, the latest one a spectacular overtime loss to Lokomotiv. The game was marked by a misconduct served to Alexei Yashin in the 3rd period for participating in a fight which was instigated by CSKA defenseman Anton Belov after Yashin checked him from behind. Lokomotiv's new helmsman Kari Heikkil? might give a little more thought to protecting Yashin, one of the team leaders with 10 points in 13 games, from getting provoked and lost for an entire game with a misconduct or even a suspension.

"I still have to figure out who's who on this team – commented Heikkil? to Russian sports news website Championat.ru, - yet it's clear we're going to get hooked more and we'll have to designate a 'tough guy' within our team to be able to retaliate."

Notwithstanding Belov's witty attack on Yashin which knocked the former NHLer out of the game when it was still tied 1:1 and goalie Tom Lawson's heroics who made a few point blank saves on Yaroslav's forwards CSKA still lost due to unnecessary penalties which left the team 5 on 3 in overtime which led to Randy Robitaille's game winner.

The situation in the bottom half of the table is just as thrilling if not more. Apart from the clumsy Avangard, still trying to climb up from the 12th place, there's also Ak Bars which so far has been the biggest sensation of the championship. Zinetula Bilyaletdinov's team is not just not looking like the champion it was not so long ago, but it's not even giving the impression of a contender. Kazan had been on a 5 game losing streak at the start of the week and added two more with a 3:0 sweep from Severstal and a 2:3 home loss to Dynamo. The shutout in Cherepovets was marked by plenty of disciplinary action against Ak Bars which was expressing its frustration in rough play with 7 penalties, one of them a misconduct against just 1 of the hosts. All 3 goals, however, were scored on even strength with starter Vasily Koshechkin finishing the game but getting pulled out of the next one after Dynamo hammered him with 3 goals in two periods. Goaltending is not the only apparent problem in Kazan. Ak Bars, once able to convert almost a third of its powerplays, is only 15th in the league with a 10.7% conversion ratio. Coach Bill is now looking at a world of problems with his team already out of the playoff pool and facing tough opponents next week in HC MVD and Avangard in Omsk. Will they break the disastrous 7 game losing streak and get back on track or are we looking at another possible coaching change?

Herbers Esoteric

With Ian Herbers getting fined in the ECHL this week, I thought I would do a Ian Herbers Esoteric since we dont have any Isles hockey for another two days.

 

Ian played a total of 6 Games on the Island ranking him at #342nd in all time Games Played.  He had no gaols and has as many Assists as current Isles Phenom, Mike Comrie, with a total of 3 Assists.  The 3 Points Ian scored is good for #276th overall.  He is tied in PIMs with Vasicek, Bootland, and Sim and 28 other former Isles with 2 PIMs each.

Esoteric #6

I am sorry but I cant bring myself to do all that work for a single goal. Good thing I went out and saw the Original Idols Show - Hosted by Barry Williams aka Greg Brady. Thank God for Tivo.

Pete broke down the PIMs "scored" by teams. There definitely is a slant here against our team. Our boys need to be ever diligent in ensuring they practice discipline in all they do.

A quick snapshot of penalty minutes shows us as a team having 90 minutes of PIM time in 6 games. 6 games is 360 minutes. That means we have been shorthanded a quarter of our season so far this year.

Whomever is to blame, players, refs, zorkin the space god....this is completely unacceptable.

We have a whole different group of players and it is the same guys from last year that are taking them. Sillinger, Simon, Hilbert, Bergenheim, Gervais, Campoli. Only new guy is Bootland.

I also have heard alot about the disappearance of Mike Comrie. Our Captain hasn't been up on the board too often lately either. I think we have just gotten used to this in the past.

RANDOM ESOTERIC

* Congrats to Ricky for being the 4th Islander goalie to ever play 12,000 minutes in net with 12,008 minutes.

* Congrats to Vasicek for his 150th NHL Point and for now being only the 4th Islander this season to score 2 or more goals.

* I missed one the other night. With the Leafs drubbing of the Islanders, the Leafs scored the 8,500th Goal Against the NY Islanders. It only took 2,719 games for it to happen.

Saturday October 13, 1973 -- Al Arbour's first home game as Islander coach - 6-0 loss to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Flyers (They had tied Atlanta 1-1 three nights earlier). Arbour's first win wouldn't come for another two weeks -- 3-2 over the Rangers

October 13, 1977 - Mike Bossy's first goal comes in his NHL debut, but the Isles lose 3-2 to Buffalo. The NY Times notes: "Bossy ... is regarded as a potentially high-scoring prospect". Fittingly, Trottier and Gillies assist on the goal.

Saturday October 13, 1979 -- First home game of the first Cup season - Isles lose 5-2 to Buffalo, but Norman Weidner of East Islip, later nicknamed "One Shot Norman", wins a car in Score-O the very first time its played. (He may still be around--someone named "Norman ScoreO" posts to the Islander blog on Newsday.com)

Saturday October 13 1984 -- In the first home game of the post-Cup era, Mike Bossy scores in overtime as the Islanders defeat Chicago 7-6. It extends the Isles' home dominance over the Hawks to 17-0-4 in the past 21 games. The Isles would beat the Hawks at the Coliseum only once in the next 19 years -- on Al Arbour night.

Forever1940's Stat Trick

The Isles played their first five games in only seven days -- the first time in their history they've ever started a season with that condensed of a schedule. In October 1980 and January 1995 the Isles opened the season with five games in eight days. (It will be six games in nine days Saturday -- which will equal the most condensed first half-dozen).

After Saturday's game, the Isles will play only three times in the next eighteen days (Oct 18, Oct 20, Oct 27).
It will mark the fewest games that the Isles have played in any eighteen game stretch in their history (excluding the late season 1992 strike and the three Olympics).

One has to wonder how the Isles got straddled with such a strange schedule. In fact, the Isles are playing only nine games this month - fewest of any team in the League.

RaRa Notes: Esoteric #4 was late due to travel and work. After seeing last night’s debacle its just easier to combine the two. I hate doing the esoteric after a loss. It is just no fun. With us scoring a single goal it makes it easy except for the 9 penalties we took. This is a trend that I do not like. 21 minutes in the box meant we played an entire period down a player.

Save The Last Chicken Dance for Me - Oct 11th

First of all, a little info on how I'm planning to contribute to this site. I wanted to register for the NYI Blog Box, but being a full time student with 2 part time jobs, I didn't think I would have the time. I was then going to start my own blog called "Save the Last Chicken For Me. When I told Roger about it, he suggested that I just post on here. Seeing that by doing it this way, I don't have to go through the hassle of creating a site and such, I decided to take him up on his offer.

Unfortunately, I am not an insider. I don't have any behind the scenes access to players or coaching staff, although my brother met Rick DiPietro's father (or fell for a clever ruse). So what can you expect here? I'll try to do what I did last night for the game, and have a live blog of what's happening in each game. It's not polished, hopefully it's a bit funny, but basically it's just my views on what's going on in the game. I try to write it so that someone without access to the game can read it and get more info than they would if they read a post-game wrap-up. We might be able to update it after every period, although I'm not sure if that's going to happen. Also, I'll miss a few games and should be at the Colliseum for a few games, so obviously you won't get that.

I'll try to post entries in between games as well. Like the rest of today's entry. (Should be a live blog during tonight's game).

Some questions for tonight:

Which Jason Blake will we see?

I was saddened to hear that Jason has serious health issues. I enjoyed the energy he brought to the team, and how he never gave up on a shift or a game. i was disappointed that he decided to go public with his unhappiness with his contract negotiations; I felt that was very unprofessional, but everybody's human and can let frustration cloud their judgement. I hope he fully recovers, but that he doesn't score against us.

Which Mike Comrie will we see?

Comrie made Garth Snow look like a genius in the first two games of the season, but hasn't had the same impact in the second 2 games of the season. Someone on Islander Fans speculated that perhaps it was because Miss Duff was in the house, and that perhaps she had, how shall we say, robbed him of some of his energy. Obviously he's not going to score 2 goals a game for the entire season, but it would be great to see that top line light it up again tonight.

When will Comrie hook a brother up?

You don't really see stories about Rick being spotted with a celebrity gal pal (I would know, my wife reads all the celebrity mags). So, is Mike going to hook rick up with one of Hilary's celeb friends? On second thought, we don't need our franchise goalie dealing with public relationship drama while he's trying to get ready for a game. But it would be nice to get a third hot celebrity fan to complete our line with Duff and Christy Brinkley...

Rick or Dubie?

We all know that Rick would like nothing better than to play all 82 games of the regular season, but that's not going to happen. It seems tonight would be the perfect opportunity to give Dubie his first start on the year. He looked solid in the pre-season game against the Devs in the Port.

We'll see what happens tonight. It will be key to jump on the Leafs early. Their fans surely remember the 7-1 pasting that the Canes laid on them 2 nights ago, and if we can score a few in the 1st, the fans will turn on them and make our job easier.

Game 4 – Rags 7:00 – NVMC

Pre-Game

Tonight’s game is on VS, but so far during the pre-game, the announcers have been fair. Nice interview with Guerin. I think that more than anything else, the shift in the captaincy is the biggest difference this season.

Period One

First shift. Wish I was seeing Bergie instead of Tambellini on the wing with Satan and Vasicek. First chant of the evening, can’t make it out on the TV. Bergeron with the first big hit, nice to see.

First goal is really important here. With a packed house here, we need to keep the Rags on their heels. Freaking announcer just jinxed us: “In the last 4 outings, Jagr hasn’t dented the twine”. You heard it here first, Jagr has at least one goal. I thought Howie (king of the jinx) wasn’t in the building.

Let’s see how the Isles new look PP fares. After our great start in Game 1, we haven’t done too well. Hopefully Berard will help out. First PP over, looked OK. Only dangerous at the end. Hopefully the next one will look better.

On the replay, Campoli jumped into the slot. He didn’t play that great in the pre-season, but he seems to have stepped it up in the regular season, where the points count.

Rick just missed the goal on the PK. I’m guessing he’s practicing for later. Nice hustle by Hilbert. Isles have had the better of the play for the first 8 minutes. Good PK.

8:43 left in 1st. First audible “Let’s Go Islanders” cheer on TV. Great save by Rick after a Rag made a great strip on Bergeron, leading to a 3-1. Good rebound save as well. Marc-Andre CANNOT keep doing that.

Can I say enough that I LOVE the way Fedetenko plays? Comrie gets in a scrap, and Tank has his back. I love the way that he sticks up for his teammates

GREAT Defensive play by Martinek on the 4-4. Jagr looked like he was going to get around him, but Marty shut him off.

WOW oh WOW. Rick with a few great saves at around the 14 minute mark. He let up a few rebounds, but recovered. But Bergeron needs to wake up on D, otherwise he might see himself on the bench.

The one player that we didn’t get (other than Smyth leaving) that I wish we could have gotten is Chris Drury. There are not too many players that have been as clutch as he has.

Penalty call in the last few minutes. We’re lucky that it’s going to go both ways. Gervais got ROCKED.

Both goalies have looked sharp thus far. The game has been pretty even so far. I don’t anticipate too many blowouts this year between these two teams.

BS call on Witt. There’s no way that was a penalty. In order to trip someone, you have stick your leg out. Witt had both legs together. Nice play by Sutton to draw a penalty on Shanny.

Bergeron GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They say that it’s bad to give up a goal in the last minute of the game. What about in the last 5 seconds? Suck it Henrik!

1st Intermission

I just got my download of the new Radiohead album. Haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet.

Period Two

Rangers Goal. 1-1 now. Tyutin with the goal off the post. Not a horrible goal by Rick, but you never like to see him give one up.

Rags are buzzing now. Isles need to step it up.

Rick with a highway robbery save on Gome$. Yeah, I know it’s with a “z”, but you can’t make a dollar sign with a “z”. Sue me.

Pretty even game so far. So considering the fact that every media outlet says the Rangers will win the cup this year, does that mean that the Isles will be in the Eastern Conference Finals?

7 minute mark. Gotta say that Rick hasn’t been wandering as much as he was last season. That’s good news.

Good coverage in front to protect Rick. Remember a few years ago when people could crowd our goalie with impunity? No longer.

Nice drive by Shanny. I obviously can’t root for any Rag player, but Shanahan is a class act. I wish he was on the Island.

Penalty on the Rags. Let’s see our PP imitate the one we had in the season opener.

Great one-timer. It seems that our team this year understands what we didn’t understand last year. If you have a 5 on 3 for more than 30 seconds, you MUST score. Here’s to the first of many goals for BB.

Penalty on Lundqvist. He looked like Ricky the first year that they put in the trapezoid. Another must score.

A great shot of Hilary Duff. She thinks the Rangers are “So Yesterday.” Yeah, I got that joke from my wife. Sue me.

So close to another goal at the 16:40 mark. I have to say that our PP looks MUCH better than last year on average.

3rd Period

Gallant says that our D is running around and our forwards have to come back more. True.

Wow, great save by Henrik off the opening face off. The announcer just said that you have to like what you see from Cam Ward. I agree, since he’s on my fantasy team.

PP for the Rags. Uh oh…. 5 on 3. Let’s hope that we can kill this off.

What a save by Rick on the penalty kill. Standing ovation, and boy does he deserve it.

OK 5-3. I can’t say this enough, and I think that Hilary Duff even knows this. It is a MUST SCORE. Put them away…

Fantastic save by Henrik on the 5-3, with the help of the post. What a shock, the whistle blew with the puck loose.

What? How the hell was that a penalty on Guerin? Do we need to have a separate penalty book for the Islanders and every other team again? Holding? How about “skating”?

I think Hilary Duff has more screen time than Andy Hilbert tonight.

Less than five minutes in the game and Gome$ still has ZERO points. Anyone still pissed that we didn’t over pay for him?

Islanders Esoteric #3

RaRa Notes: Let me start by saying Esoteric #4 will be a bit late as I will be at the game and will not have an opportunity to be around a computer to crunch the numbers.

A lot of people were complaining today about the team and our loss. I chalk it up to you win some you lose some. We held the Caps to 12 shots but 2 went in the net. What are you to do.

Two areas that I think need to be looked at are face-offs and penalties. In face-offs we were 24 out of 53 (45%) as a team. Comrie lost 10 of the of the 18 he faced (44%). In penalties we were 6 for 12 minutes, which is a long time considering the Caps were only in the box for 8 minutes. Trends I am seeing are Comrie and Martinek both with 8 PIM in 3 games so far this year. That is 16 PIMs between them while the rest of the team has 18 PIMs. Note to Mike Comrie: If you don’t score – you are not allowed to get a penalty.

Speaking of Mike his pace total dropped to 109 goals for the year. Meanwhile Richard Park is on pace for 27 Goals.

Today, it can be mentioned that Comrie could have been awarded an Game Winning Assist for the Caps. Not a good turn over Mike.

RaRa Log Part 1: Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends and family.

RaRa Log Part 2: We say goodbye to Freddy Myer today who spent a brief 35 Games with the Islanders. That ties him in all-time Games Played with Jason Dawe and Bob Beers at #240th. He never scored a Goal so that means Me, Freddy and 133 other Islanders have never scored a Goal for our team. He did score 3 Assist and 3 Points which is good for the #276th and #220th spots respectively. We wish Freddy well.

The penalties seem to take a toll last night or did they? Let’s take a look. 8 penalties for 16 minutes. 4 penalties in the first period – No Goals. 3 Penalties in the second period – 1 Goal. 1 penalty in the 3rd period – 2 Goals. The first game we had 4 penalties total all game and scored 6 goals. You do the math.

Haven’t heard much about face-offs. There were 60 F/Os last night, we won 29 of them. We had 6 guys take them. Comrie took 18 and won 11 for 61% win percentage. Sillinger won 12 of the 19 he faced for 63%. Hilber took 2 face off and won 1 for 50%. Newly extended Richard Park, took 6 and won only 1 for a dismal 17% rating. Vasicek lost 10 of the 14 he faced off with for a 29%. And Satan lost the only face-off he took.


ISLANDERS ESOTERIC.

To start we had 7 players play in their second game with the Isles. We all know who they are so no need to rehash it here. All 7 of them are tied with 11 others at #378th in all-time Games Played.

Campoli
Congrats to Chris on scoring his 50th NHL Point and 50th Point with the Islanders. With this 50th Point, Chris breaks into the top #100 of all-time in Points, tied with Ken Leiter and Hubie McDonough. Chris played in his 133rd game as an NHLer and an Islander. Despite what I said in the last esoteric, Chris is at #117th and is 3 games behind Rollie the Goalie. His Power Play Goal last night gave him two on the season and doubling his career total PPGs at 4. It is his 12th Goal as an Islander and moves him into the #112th spot tied with 4 others including Dave Langevin. He is on pace for 82 Goals on the season.

Comrie
2 Game Winning Goals. 2 Nights. On pace for 164 Goals this year. His second GWer of the year moves him into a 29 way tie with 29 others at #87 overall in the GWG listings. The Goal when ranked as a Goal is his 4th as an Islander and ranks him at #184th overall, tying him with 9 others. He is the 193rd player to ever score 4 Goals on Long Island. He also has 6 points all-time which gives him and 10 others the 236th spot in the Points rankings. On the all-time fun meter Mike is climbing rapidly up the charts as he has been tons of fun to watch. Oleg Who?

Hunter
Playing in his 246th Game all-time on Long Island, he breaks into the top 70 on the all-time Games Played roster. He is 1 Game behind Brad Isbister. His 65th Assist tonight breaks a tie with Miro Satan and leaves him in sole possession of the #67th spot on the Assist List. He also broke a tie with Miro in the Points list as well with his 127th Point in sole ownership at #56th overall. Keep in mind Trent needed 246 Games to get to this point on the all-time list while Miro needed only 165 games to do it. Trent is on pace to score 81 Goals and 81 Assists this year.

Sim
We would like to welcome Jon Sim to the Islanders Esoteric tonight with his first Assist as an Islander. With this Assist he is the 326th player to ever score and Assist this ties him with a mere 34 others at #292nd all time. The Point makes him the 335th player to score a Point and ties him with 29 others at the #306th spot.

Guerin
Our Captain, scored his 5th helper since joining us. He is on fire to complete the season with 205 Points all in Assists. His 5 Assists ties him with 12 others including Ricky at #224th. The Points ties him with 14 others, including Tank, who is next in the Esoteric tonight, at the #246th spot.

Fedotenko
Tank’s multi-Assist night gives him 4 Assist on the year tying him with 18 others including Osgood. He is at #237th overall. The Points ties him with 14 others, including Guerin, who is just above in the Esoteric tonight, at the #246th spot.

PENALTIES
Fedotenko, Sim, and Vasicek were the 354th, 355th and 356th players to ever be awarded with a penalty. They are all hovering around the #300 spot in all-time rankings. However, Sillinger’s 2 PIMs gives him 50 with the team and the #166th spot tied with 4 others.
